Renting During COVID-19

On March 16th, California’s governor issued an executive order which suspends certain evictions of renters and homeowners. The ordinance temporarily prohibits evictions for tenants who are unable to pay their rent due to COVID -19. In addition evictions have been prohibited for the following circumstances: no-fault reasons, unauthorized occupants or pets, and nuisance related to COVID-19.

COVID-19 Circumstances that might make an individual unable to pay rent include loss of income due to workplace closure, additional child care expenditures due to school closings, health care expenditures related to COVID-19, and other reasonable expenditures related to the government ordered emergency measures. In addition to dealing with possible evictions, it’s possible that you might deal with your landlord attempting to take all or part of your government stimulus check.
